Chicago Cyclocross Cup – Hopkins Park

The Chicago Cyclocross Cup came to Hopkins Park on Sunday. Category 1,2 and 3, men, women’s and Juniors  events and the Officially Unofficial Illinois Single Speed Championships In it’s second year the race brings riders from all over Chicagoland. 305 riders pre-registered. Cyclocross “races take place typically in the autumn and winter (the international or “World Cup” season is September-January), and consists of many laps of a short (2.5–3.5  km or 1.5–2  mile) course featuring pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills and obstacles requiring the rider to quickly dismount, carry the bike whilst navigating the obstruction and remount in one motion. Races for senior categories are generally between 30 minutes and an hour long, with the distance varying depending on the ground conditions”. I hung out for the entire event and had a great time. Dinner Butler was barbequeing and Half Acre had baked goods for sale. What surprised me is it is a family event – with a mild sub culture undertone. Sort of like having your favorite hipster over for Sunday dinner. Don’t get me wrong the riders take the competition seriously.  There series lasts until the first week of December. Check it out.
